A Practical Guide to your Pilgrimage

You may begin your Three Day Pilgrimage on any day during the Three Day Pilgrimage Season, which typically runs during the summer months.

The Three Day Pilgrimage Season commences on 1st June and anyone can complete the Pilgrimage on any day from this day up until the 13th August. The Three Day Pilgrimage ends on 15th August each year. (Sunday 13th August is the final day for pilgrims to begin the Three Day Pilgrimage for 2023).

After arrival at the lakeshore and boat pass received from the reception area, pilgrims make their way towards the boat. The boat journey across the lake is less than 10 minutes. Boats run daily between 11.00am and 3.00pm.

Coming on the Three Day Pilgrimage, pilgrims agrees to undertake the pilgrimage programme of prayer and quiet reflection in bare feet, keeping Vigil and maintaining the Fast. Pilgrims must be at least 15 years old, physically fit and able to kneel unaided and free from any illness aggravated by fasting.

Lough Derg is a sacred space and the following are not permitted on the island during the pilgrimage or retreat: food, sweets, chewing gum, alcoholic and non-alcholic drinks, cameras, mobile phones, radios, ipods/ipads, electronic tablets, instruments, games, articles and literature to sell or distribute.
