A Practical Guide to the new Pilgrimage on the Lough Derg Lakeshore

Update 21 October 2020

The Irish Government has announced that Level 5 restrictions will be in force across all 26 counties for 6 weeks, beginning from midnight tonight.

Lough Derg will not offer the new ‘Pilgrimage along the Lakeshore’ until further notice.

The Pilgrim Path remains open for personal prayer and pilgrimage, subject to the travel limitations and other government regulations in force at any given time.

The Prior, Fr La, intends to walk the Pilgrim Path in a personal pilgrimage each week over the coming months, bringing with him along the Lough Derg shore the prayers and intentions of our pilgrims and friends.

The Lough Derg Pilgrim Path is the setting for the New Pilgrimage

The Pilgrimage is completed outdoors.

Pilgrims will be accompanied by a member of the Lough Derg team as they ‘Walk and Pray’ the pilgrimage on the renewed Lough Derg Pilgrim Path.

There are two distance options. 8km Pilgrimage or 12km Pilgrimage.

Pilgrims can select the distance most suitable on booking.

Pilgrimage Programme : Max of 15 pilgrims per group. Up to two groups per day. Staggered Start times. Pilgrims can select the time and distance suitable from the booking form.

The Pilgrimage will be approx. 5 hrs

The Pilgrim Path offers a moderate walk on gentle terrain. Pilgrims are advised to wear good walking shoes/boots and to be prepared for the changeable weather conditions at Lough Derg.

In addition to what is available on the new information boards each pilgrim will receive a copy of the guide to the Lough Derg Pilgrim Path and some Prayer Resources that will be used along the way.

A small bottle of water, a pack of oat cakes and a piece of fruit will be provided to each pilgrim.  Pilgrims may wish to bring a snack/packed lunch. Here’s a video from Sunday 20th September when Pilgrim Bernard surprised us with his special snack – in the spirit of the Three Day Pilgrimage

Weather permitting, pilgrims will have the opportunity for a simple Mass reminiscent of worship in The Penal Times.

The walk begins and finishes at the Visitor Centre.

The Lough Derg Shop will be open in the Visitor Centre.  Pilgrim Walkers can write a prayer petition or request a candle to be lit or have their loved ones included in Lough Derg Masses.

Please note that Lough Derg will be implementing the Public Health Measures that are in line with Government Guidelines at this time.

Only those who have pre-booked will be admitted. Numbers are limited.
