Fr La’s weekly reflection ‘Pause and Ponder’ from along the Pilgrim Path at Lough Derg.
As autumn moves toward winter, the succession of flowers that brought so much colour along the path through spring and summer has come to an end.
Thank God for the mosses that now have come into their own, delighting in the damp and in the rain.
Each individual sphagnum plant is tiny and insignificant but together they spread multi-coloured carpets and raise up eye-catching mounds and hummocks.
They are also quietly at their work.
It is they and their kind that capture carbon so effectively, as they lay down our blanket bogs.
Often, in the face of the climate crisis, I feel quite insignificant.
These sphagnum mosses remind me of what we all can achieve together.
