Fr La’s weekly ‘Pause and Ponder’ from along the Pilgrim Path at Lough Derg. This week’s reflection – ‘Standing on the Seat’
Standing on the Seat
The sign at the bottom of the track invites me up
to Davog’s Seat in bright autumn sunlight.
Alone today, I stand to gaze at what I see.
Ten thousand years ago these rocks were smoothed
by glacier sheets that covered all this land.
Five thousand years ago the Bronze age people
built a cairn and added a burial chamber.
Briars and heathers arrived in their own time.
When first I came some forty years ago
in search of Davog’s Seat, the forest pines
whose stumps remain in lines grew all around.
Today my thoughts are drawn to all that comes
and goes, myself included – a passing pilgrim.
