The Fifth Station
Here is John, the brother of James. Traditionally he is identified as “the disciple Jesus loved,” who stood by the cross along with Mary, and in several of the stations he is shown close to Mary.
SIMON HELPS JESUS TO CARRY HIS CROSS
Simon was a native of Cyrene, a foreigner in Jerusalem, perhaps a pilgrim celebrating Passover. He found himself being forced to help Jesus in carrying the cross.
Lord, Simon met with you in a way he had never expected. At times we too can suddenly be faced with someone in need of our help. May we not turn away, but willingly offer whatever help we can give.
We pause for some quiet moments of prayer, our eyes on “the outstretched arms of Christ Crucified….”
Save us, Saviour of the World, for by your Cross and Resurrection you have set us free.
