Fr La’s weekly ‘Pause and Ponder’ from along the Pilgrim Path at Lough Derg. This week’s reflection – ‘Harebells in August’.
Harebells in August
For some weeks past I have been looking forward
to share with fellow pilgrims on the Path
these pretty little harebells. Now they are here.
Among the trees and plants that month by month
bring me delight along my pilgrim way
as in their turn they bud and flower and fade,
these have no place in the memory of my childhood.
I first met harebells painted on a pair of mugs –
a thoughtful holiday gift from a longtime friend,
and many further years had come and gone
before I came across the blooms themselves.
The dry uncrowded space to right and left
on just this stretch of path must suit them well
and every August now they bring me joy
and make me wonder why they delight me so.
