11th June 2006, Loughrea, Co.Galway

This was my eighth time on Lough Derg. I return because I always get something out of my visits. However for some reason this year, I felt that during the opening three days there was a really great atmosphere on the Island. I have one picture in my mind that I will always cherish of Lough Derg in 2006. It was on day 2 after the Way of the Cross and I was heading for the dining room. I stood for awhile opposite St. Mary's Chapel where I had a good view and observed what was going on. What a scene in a remote part of rural Ireland. There were many people in the area, coming from the Basilica, and new pilgirms doing the 'Stations'. I was impressed with the number of young people who had given up either all or part of their weekend and the peacefulness and prayerful atmosphere that was evident and yet a great integration of people regardless of whether you came on your own or with others. The chance to be on a beautiful and unique Island with magnificent scenery, no prior booking required, the opportunity for the body to detox from food and drink, friendly people and staff, needs catered for and all people treated equally, great weather, peacefulness and most importantly having the health to be there, and coming away spiritually enriched and all the better for having gone to Lough Derg. And all for 45 euros!
