Manager on the Run

On Sunday 22nd April 2012, Lough Derg Manager - Deborah Maxwell will take part in the London Marathon and in doing so will not only raise much needed funds for Lough Derg but will also be supporting the charity Get Kids Going - a charity which helps disabled children to get into sports. This will be the first time Deborah has run the London marathon and you will be able to follow Deborah's progress as she embarks on her gruelling training schedule.

Deborah says:

“Since I was a child, I have always been active in sports,
involved in karate internationally and generally just keeping
fit. I always had an ambition to do a marathon before I
was forty. (Now I wonder why I hadn’t made that 30!)
Unfortunately a serious ankle injury quashed any hope of
that ever happening. The injury happened on the last day
of the year in 2007, a simple fall caused massive trauma to
the foot - ruptured ligaments on one side, torn ligaments
on the other and a fracture. Five operations later and 18
months of physiotherapy finally had me walking without
pain, this time last year. My treasured selection of shoes
has long since been put in cold storage  as I now need
good ‘sensible’ shoes. Throughout it all, (the high costs of
surgery, the pain and effort of recuperation) one thing kept
me going - I have to be able to run again.... and finally at
the start of 2011 I was able to do some light jogging again.
This is my tenth year at Lough Derg and it has been such
a privilege to have been given the opportunity to work
here, and in some small way help shape its future. There
have been lots of ups and downs, as is common in any
workplace but so many little graces bestowed that I have
always said “If I were to do a marathon it would be for
Lough Derg”. Having completed the pilgrimage 5 or 6
times, the penitential beds are now a big no-no as I can’t
afford to take a bad turn on my ankle (surgeon’s orders!);
so maybe this is my pilgrimage.
Lough Derg also seriously needs cash at this time - people
tend to forget about us in the winter which is when we
have absolutely no income so I am setting an ambitious
target of €20,000. I know as the Winter hits us it will be
very hard to get motivated to wrap up and get the miles
done but knowing that I need to do this for the Island
will keep me going and give me the push I need.
In order to qualify for the London marathon I entered via
the children’s charity Get Kids Going which helps children
with disability get into sport by funding sports wheelchairs,
prosthetics and such. I know, with having been on crutches
for the best part of two years how frustrating it is not to
be able to keep active and so this charity is close to my
heart. I am obliged to raise £2000 for them but really feel,
with pilgrim support and my own fundraising efforts, I can
raise, or rather we can raise, €20,000. Please please help
me make this possible and know how much of a difference
it will make to Lough Derg as well as these children.
I am keeping a blog which you can follow at
www.managerontherun.blogspot.com please do
follow me there and any wee comments, prayers,
training tips will be much appreciated”.
