PILGRIMAGE EXERCISES

The Fast

Fasting is a tradition honoured by many faiths and in the Christian it is especially used to enhance our spirit and deepen prayer. The purpose of fasting is to take our eyes off the things of this world and instead focus on God.

From midnight to prior to arriving on Lough Derg the pilgrim observes a complete fast from all food and drink, plain water excepted (and prescribed medication). The fast continues for three full days during which one "Lough Derg meal" a day is permitted. The first meal may be taken when the pilgrim has made at least one Station on the Island, the second at anytime on the afternoon of the second day, and the third at any time on the third day after leaving Lough Derg. The meal of the third day should be similar to those taken on the Island. On this day pilgrims may also drink mineral waters as often as they wish after departure. The fast ends at midnight of the third day.the fast

The Vigil

The Vigil is the chief penitential exercise of the Pilgrimage and means staying awake, completely and continuously, for 24 hours. It begins at 10.00pm on the first day and ends after Benediction on the second day. At that time the pilgrim retires to bed.

The Stations

Having arrived on the Island the pilgrim goes to the hostel, removes all footwear, and begins the First Station. Three Stations are completed before 9.20pm. All the prayers of these stations are said silently. Pilgrims come together for the Vigil during the night. During this time the prayers of a further four Stations are said aloud in common in the Basilica during the night. Between these Stations pilgrims may leave the Basilica, use the night shelter, and walk around the immediate vicinity of the Basilica only, taking care to keep their voices down. A further Station is made outside in the morning after the Sacrament of Reconciliation and a final one on the third day after Mass.the stations
